Café Pi,
Identity & Guidelines

Challenge

The goal of this mandate was to develop an interactive iPad application that encompasses the work of (ANDY GOLDSWORTHY), the legendary land artist. The overall objective was to create an interesting e-book that would explore the work and world that Goldsworthy created. This mandate didn't contain many constraints, which let me explore many different possibilities. During my research, I found out that most of his preliminary artworks were created in a forest close to his childhood home in Leeds, England. Since he discovered his passion for land art in this location, it gave me an idea.
Café Pi needs a branding that will last for a century or longer without dying out. They need someone to do it right, so they don't have to do it again. The identity for Pi was a branding based on a single icon, that the public will recognize in a few years without the name. This icon works on it's own, just as the type does, and it comes together during certain moments. Which is always be something quite special.

The main goal was to create an identity that projects itself to a very large target, and brings every one and anyone in. This was done by simply creating an entire identity tied to the game of chess.

Outcome

A very simplistic form has been developed, it contains three elements. The grid the logo has been constructed on is minimal rendition of an 8x8 chess board, reduced to 2x2. The two circles you see is a top view of both chess pieces. The general shape of the form resembles the letter P.

There are many ways the logo can relate to the type. Sometimes the type is allowed to break through the safe space in situations like this when it would be placed in relation to the negative space.
